Book Club Meeting: An Odyssey

Book Club Meeting: An Odyssey
£8.00

We are pleased to announce that the next session of our Book Club will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 5 pm, at our usual meeting point in the Old Taberdars' Room at The Queen's College. Based on the suggestions submitted during our last meeting, we will discuss Daniel Mandelsohn's ‘An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic’.

Part memoir, part literary criticism, the book tells the story of how author's 81-year-old father Jay, who had been a professor of mathematics, enrolls in his son’s university class on The Odyssey (taught in translation). For Jay, this is 'one last chance' to learn the great literature he'd neglected in his youth, and a final opportunity to more fully understand his son, a writer and classicist. But as the two discuss (and very much disagree on) The Odyssey in class and during a Mediterranean cruise retracing the mythical journeys of Odysseus, father and son both learn and come to appreciate new things about one another.
